A recent report has revealed that India’s cities generate more amount of waste than any other country’s cities. More than 62 million tonnes of waste is produced by the Indian cities every year. It has recorded that 82% of waste is collected. Out of this 82% of waste, only 28% of waste goes for recycling while other waste cannot be recycled. This remaining waste goes into rivers and water bodies. In India, urbanization and industrialization are increasing day by day. As per the study of Jamia Milla Islamia University Delhi if such industrial growth continues till 2051 the yearly generated waste will become 5 times than the today’s annually produced waste in 2051. This is the most dangerous thing and can affect hazardously to the upcoming generations.
D.J. Nagaraj who is the health officer of the Mysuru City Corporation has stated that they don’t waste as waste that wants waste as the wealth. Also, they have announced that zero landfill is their motto.
Each and every citizen of the Mysuru has given two types of dustbins one for compostable waste and other for non-compostable waste. The workers of the city corporation have given 400 push carts and 170 auto-tippers. The workers collect this waste from the houses of the people and deliver the waste material to the various centers. In the waste material, there may be metal, footwear, plastic cups and bottles which are sold to the waste dealers and after selling such material, the remaining waster is converted into the compost and this compost is sold to the local farmers.
Many people in the Mysuru have formed their own recycling plants. One of the owners of this recycling plants, D. Madegowda has stated: “waste is not a problem if we generate money from this waste.
Mysuru is one of the beautiful cities in India which is known for its rich culture. You will see a lot of palaces of the kings there. The awareness about the cleanliness is spread among the local people with street plays, different WhatsApp messages and through radio channels. Some employees even visit every house in their allocated area and aware the people in those areas.
402 tonnes of waste is generated in the Mysuru city every day. Almost, half of these waste means 201 tonnes of waste is passed through the composting process. The government bodies in the Mysuru have taken many initiatives to convert the waste into the compost in an efficient way. The government of Mysuru is helping the people financially in the building their own compost plants.
Some of the compost which is generated in Mysore is transported to the other cities. As the compost makes the soil fertile and helps in the growth of the plant, it has a high demand among farmers. Also, farmers are preferring the good quality compost which is affordable.
The people who care about the environment are doing their best to convert all the waste of the city into useful material. The other advantage of this campaign is that it is creating employment opportunities for other people. The composting business is one of the most profitable businesses in this century. The only downside of this business that it requires a large area and initial investment in the machines. The local people in the Mysuru who own a large amount of land have started this business.
